Anonymous Guest Post: Dry Dock

I had a conversation with a good friend recently about current politics. This is what said good friend emailed me after our conversation (reprinted here with permission):

OK, enough of the handwringing in Denver. And please, who cares if John McCain has 7, 8 or 500 luxury condos in Boca. You're missing the point here boys and girls. Quit calling for Barack Obama to roll up the sleeves and deliver the vulcan death grip. Attacks on John McCain are absolutely fruitless. Keep it up and you'll go down as the group that coughed up the most fertile turn election in history. Not since Aaron was selected to succeed Moses has the stage been better set for change. And yet you keep missing the mark. John McCain is untouchable. You can't pin anything on a war hero except purple hearts. Give it up. It won't work.

But here is what will. While the focus of the election is on Barack Obama's qualifications for office, the real story is the pummeling the Republicans should be taking for the hole they've put us in over the last 8 years. The gang that's gathering in St. Paul next week are the same folks that delivered George W. Bush not once but twice. They are the responsible PARTY and they need to be held responsible for the current mess. Iraq, Katrina, Mortgage Crisis, Energy Meltdown...choose your headline. These guys have shown a complete inability to govern. Beat up on GWB all you want in Denver. He's not running for a third term. And framing John McCain as his surrogate, leads to the war hero thing. It's not his fault. John McCain's a good guy leading a really weak party. Make him the equivalent of a baseball manager, hired after the all-star break to steer a bad team through the end of a terrible season.

Deliver an oblique blow by attacking the party and all boats rise together. An attack on a party isn't personal. An attack on a war vet is. Americans are notoriously cautious about giving one party control of the Exec and Legislative branches. But to right the ship, bust out the bilge pumps and dry this sucker out, that is what it will take. Let's tow the Republicans to dry dock. That's a place an old Navy war hero can feel right at home.
